Cheongju is the capital of Chungcheongbuk-do and one of the largest cities in central South Korea. It sits between Seoul, Daejeon and the inland regions of Chungcheong, with KTX access through Osong Station and a large urban center surrounded by mountains, reservoirs and rural townships.

The city's most important international story is Jikji. Printed at Heungdeoksa Temple in Cheongju in 1377 using movable metal type, the surviving second volume is recognized by UNESCO as the oldest existing evidence of a book printed with this technology. That makes Cheongju one of the most important places in the global history of printing.

Cheongju is not only a museum city. Sangdangsanseong gives you a complete mountain-fortress walk, Cheongnamdae preserves a former presidential retreat beside Daecheong Lake, Suamgol provides a hilltop neighborhood and night view, and the Culture Factory area combines contemporary art with the reuse of a former tobacco-processing complex.

For a first visit, one day works if you concentrate on Jikji and central Cheongju. Two days are much better if you also want Sangdangsanseong, Cheongnamdae or Chojeong.

Cheongju is also easier to reach than many inland destinations. Osong Station is on the KTX network, while express and intercity buses connect the city directly with Seoul and other major cities.

Understand Cheongju Before You Plan

Cheongju is geographically large after administrative consolidation, so divide it into travel zones.

The Jikji and Culture Factory zone contains the Early Printing Museum, Heungdeoksa Temple Site, modern printing exhibitions, MMCA Cheongju and the wider Culture Factory complex.

The central old-city zone includes Seongan-gil, Yukgeori Market, the former Cheongju Eupseong area, Seomun Market Samgyeopsal Street and Suamgol farther uphill.

Start with Jikji

Jikji is the abbreviated name for Baegun hwasang chorok buljo jikji simche yojeol, a Buddhist text compiled by the monk Baegun.

The surviving metal-type edition was printed at Heungdeoksa Temple in Cheongju in July 1377. UNESCO recognizes it as the oldest surviving evidence of movable metal-type printing.

That date is 78 years before the Gutenberg Bible commonly dated to 1455, which makes Jikji essential to any discussion of early movable-type printing history.

Jikji was registered in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2001, and the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize was later created to support documentary-heritage preservation.

The archaeological site beside the museum matters because this is where Jikji was printed in 1377.

The temple itself did not survive, and the exact location was confirmed through archaeological excavation after artifacts bearing the Heungdeoksa name were discovered in the 1980s.

Today the site is protected as a historic place and should be visited together with the museum rather than treated as a separate attraction.

Walking the site after seeing the exhibitions makes the story much more concrete: the history of global printing is connected to a specific temple landscape in Cheongju.

The surviving metal-type volume displayed in historical photographs is not permanently housed in Cheongju.

The surviving second volume is preserved by the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris.
