Introduction to TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean)
The TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is the official Korean language proficiency exam designed for non-native speakers and overseas Koreans. It is the most widely recognized test for assessing Korean language skills and is an essential requirement for studying, working, or applying for residency in Korea.
Purpose of the Test
To provide an objective assessment of Korean language proficiency
To serve as a requirement for admission and scholarships at Korean universities (undergraduate and graduate)
To be used for employment, visa applications, and permanent residency in Korea
To help learners measure their progress and set learning goals
Test Structure
TOPIK is divided into TOPIK I (beginner) and TOPIK II (intermediate to advanced).
TOPIK I (Levels 1–2)
Sections: Listening and Reading
Evaluates basic communication skills in everyday life
TOPIK II (Levels 3–6)
Sections: Listening, Reading, and Writing
Evaluates academic and professional Korean language skills
Proficiency Levels
Level 1: Understands basic expressions and simple sentences
Level 2: Able to communicate in everyday situations
Level 3: Possesses language skills necessary for social activities
Level 4: Can understand lectures and professional topics at university level
Level 5: Can perform tasks and research in specialized fields
Level 6: Near-native fluency; able to use Korean professionally and academically
Test Schedule & Administration
Held six times a year in Korea (January, April, May, July, October, November)
Conducted in over 80 countries worldwide
Administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED)
