“Kim Namjoon! Kim Seokjin! Min Yoongi! Jung Hoseok! Park Jimin! Kim Taehyung! Jeon Jungkook! BTS!”
On June 13th, 2013, Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단), or as you might know them, BTS made their debut to the world under Big Hit Entertainment. A decade later, it is without a doubt that BTS is one of the biggest music artists in history. To give you a glimpse into their influence, the President of South Korea appointed them as special envoys for future generations and culture. They’ve delivered messages for the youth through the United Nations. They’ve spoken at the White House! They are the first K-pop group to be nominated for a Grammy. As of 2023, they are the best selling artists in South Korean history, with a whopping 40 million albums sold. They have millions of fans hailing from all over the world— including me!
Growing up, BTS global presence was undeniable. Whether it was on American music award shows or seeing their committed fanbase on social media, they were everywhere! However, it wasn’t until 2021 that I became an ARMY, or true fan of the group! What I began to admire about their group was their unique personalities and their great appreciation for their fan base. They were a group that honored their roots and humble beginnings.
By a lucky stroke of fate, the duration of my internship fell during BTS’ 10th Year Festa! From June 12th-June 25th 2023, BTS’ agency HYBE collaborated with the Seoul Metropolitan Government for the celebration called “BTS Presents Everywhere!” Famous landmarks around Seoul including Namsan Tower, Lotte World Tower, various bridges in Seoul, were lit up purple, the color used to symbolize the international popstars.
I was grateful I was able to attend the grand finale of the celebration on June 18th at Yeouido Hangang Park! According to HYBE, there were more than 400,000 people in attendance for the celebration. Across the park, there were exhibits for fans to walk through that highlighted some of their achievements from the past ten years. They partnered with various K-beauty companies, and I was able to get free products from Laneige and Mamonde!
Around 5PM, I was able to see a livestream broadcasted throughout the park of BTS’ leader RM, or Kim Nam-joon. Even though I couldn’t understand what he was saying, it was still amazing to hear him speak and be surrounded by thousands of fans who loved the group just as much as I did.
At 8:30, fireworks lit up the night sky over the Han River. As I sat there in awe, I couldn’t believe I was there! This was my first BTS/Kpop event of any kind, and I felt nothing but gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate one of my favorite groups ever.
