When my plane landed in Incheon, I immediately felt overwhelmed yet excited. A mass of white columns, painted with neon signs, flashed Hangul (Korean) characters. I was staying in Hongdae, Seoul’s bustling youth/expat district. With its direct access to a major subway line, high-energy nightlife, and endless cosmetic stores, it seemed like the perfect place to stay.
While booking a taxi to my accommodation, I felt a twinge of nervousness. How would I navigate Seoul? Would my accommodation have English signage? What if I needed extra towels but didn’t know how to ask?
As an American expat living in South Korea, I recommend the following three places to stay in Hongdae:
Batwo Stay feels like a scene straight out of a Ghibli movie. Each morning, I woke up in a cozy suite, grabbed a quick breakfast and tea, and chatted with friendly travelers before strolling down Hongdae Street. Offering both dormitories and single rooms, the English speaking staff is friendly and supportive. The common area’s warm lighting creates the perfect atmosphere for game nights with other travlers or for enjoying crisp Seoul air from the adjacent porch.
Even now, living far from Hongdae, I still smile when I think about the large, Gudetama-esque statue that once beckoned me home. A 15-minute walk from Hongdae Street and Hongik University Station, Local Stitch Creator Town is a hidden gem for creatives and digital nomads. This space is a blend of boutique hotel and co-living hub, with single rooms featuring private bathrooms and beds. The real charm? The first floor—a social space where locals and foreigners cook, dine, and network. Pop-up shops featuring local artists’ merchandise greet you at the entrance, while vibrant digital screens flash rotating artwork.
Location, location, location. MJ HOUSE sits right above a self-serve coffee shop—meaning no noisy café chatter, just the inviting aroma of roasted Arabica beans luring you outside for an iced Americano. A two minute walk and you’re at a bus stop. Ten minutes and you’re right on Hongdae Street. There are male and female dorms offered, with each room having double-glazed windows to maximize privacy. I felt safe and comforted, and got my own pair of slippers which I happily used while lounging in the main area.
LEMON House
After a long flight, wheeling my luggage into a fully furnished, warmly lit apartment made me feel so relieved. The next morning, that relief doubled, tripled even —a fresh à la carte breakfast was delivered right to my door. LEMON House is a premium stay for travelers who want to vacation in comfort. Just 11 minutes from Hongdae Street, this apartment rental includes a private en suite bathroom, streaming services, and luxurious city views from the fifth floor. After long nights out, I fell into deep sleep, bathed in the soft neon glow from the streets below.
