Busan City and Busan Global City Foundation to Operate Foreign Student Internship Program in 2024

◈ Specialized job training linked to majors at Busan’s specialized companies from July 1 to August 31 for two months.
◈ Enhancing job competencies and connecting foreign students to employment by discovering excellent foreign talents and matching them with regional specialized companies.

□ The Busan Global City Foundation (CEO Jeon Yong-woo) announced that it will operate an internship program for foreign students in Busan starting July 1. This program has selected 11 foreign students (D-2) and graduates (D-10) from six countries, including China, Japan, Myanmar, Ghana, and Pakistan, to participate in the two-month program from July 1 to August 31 at eight companies in Busan.

○ The program finalized its preparations by recruiting participating companies and selecting students from May, signing MOUs with the participating companies on June 18, and providing orientation and mentoring to the interns on June 27. Unlike previous internship programs that were focused on “public institution experience,” this year’s program is fully geared towards “corporate employment linkage,” marking a significant shift.

○ Most participating companies are specialized firms in Busan, including Paradise Hotel Busan, Comodo Hotel, Gym Carry, Green Backpack (tourism services), Link Up, WellBI (MICE, conventions), Bogotong (trade), and Kyungdong Materials (real estate, rental). These eight companies will host the 11 interns for two months. This initiative is particularly meaningful as it supports tourism and MICE city Busan by supplementing the necessary workforce during the peak summer vacation period while reducing financial burdens, and fostering young global talents and fresh ideas.

□ Linked to the Study Busan 30K Project, this internship program aims to strengthen Busan’s status as a global study destination. The Study Busan 30K Project is a plan to attract 30,000 foreign students to Busan by 2028, making it a world-class study city. This internship program is part of this goal, providing foreign students with practical help by offering them the opportunity to experience the culture of Busan companies and gain employment opportunities.

□ One of the participating students expressed their excitement, saying, “I am very happy to have the opportunity to work at a local company while studying in Busan. Through this internship, I hope to build my career and find more opportunities in my second hometown, Busan.” A representative from Paradise Hotel Busan, one of the participating companies, said, “We expect to elevate our service level by incorporating the global sense and fresh ideas of the foreign students.”

□ Jeon Yong-woo, CEO of the Busan Global City Foundation, commented on the internship program, saying, “Busan’s specialized companies will have the opportunity to grow through the new ideas and global perspectives of foreign students. I believe this program will greatly contribute to Busan’s economic development and globalization.” He added, “We will continue to strive to make Busan a great city to study in and a comfortable global city for foreigners to live in, ensuring these students can settle in the local community.”

○ After the successful completion of this internship program, the Busan Global City Foundation plans to expand the program to offer more opportunities to foreign students, provided that the necessary budget is secured. Through this, Busan’s companies can attract more diverse global talents, and foreign students can use their experiences in Busan as a stepping stone to thrive on the global stage.

○ The foreign student internship program by Busan City and the Busan Global City Foundation presents a win-win opportunity for both Busan’s specialized companies and foreign students. It is expected to greatly aid in revitalizing the regional economy and fostering global talents. We look forward to Busan growing into an even more global city through such programs in the future.
